Corolla, North Carolina, on the Outer Banks, a string of barrier islands where I have spent many family vacations, is known for beaches where wild horses roam, Currituck Beach Lighthouse (I climbed to the top when I was a kid), and a national wildlife reserve.

It’s also a good place to buy a vacation house because it's one of the most profitable beach towns for landlords, as per The New York Times. The area’s median sales price is $608,953 and the average annual gross rental revenue is $77,971, so you can do well renting out your place. And you’ve got options: There are currently 65 houses for sale in the area on Zillow.

The area is a low-key place where the main thing to do is enjoy the beach and relax. There are plenty of good restaurants (especially if you like seafood) like Mama Easleys, North Banks, and Outer Banks Boil Company. And there’s Corolla Adventure Park, Currituck Maritime Museum, and Historic Corolla Park where you’ll find Whalehead, a mansion-turned-museum on the National Register of Historic Places.

Sound like a fit? Check out these five beach houses for sale in the area just in time for summer.
