The historic town of Rhinebeck, New York, is one of my favorite places to visit and has given me many fond memories—like picnicking on the Hudson with family, celebrating my 20th birthday at Beekman Arms (the oldest inn in the U.S.), and shopping in Rhinebeck Village (check out Oblong Books and Paper Trail).
The Dutchess County town is also a good place to consider if you’re ready for small-town living and want cultural amenities. You can find art galleries like Art Gallery 71 and Albert Shahinian Fine Art; theaters like The Center for Performing Arts and Upstate Films; and local restaurants including Foster’s Coach House, Terrapin, and The Amsterdam. It also hosts the Hudson Valley Wine & Food Fest and Dutchess County Fair.
When it comes to buying a house here, it’s getting increasingly expensive, thanks to growing demand and there aren’t a lot of options The New York Times notes. The current median sales price is $795,500 according to Realtor.com. Currently on the market are large, historic houses within walking distance of Rhinebeck Village and houses in more rural areas.
And of course, this is the Hudson Valley, so there's lots to do outdoors if you like hiking, fishing, or mountain biking, and you're not far from other popular towns like Kingston and Woodstock (another one of my favorites)—and it’s a two-hour drive from Manhattan. There’s also an Amtrak stop in Rhinecliff, which gets you to Penn Station in less than two hours.
