Visiting my cousin in the Hudson Valley town of Phoenicia, New York has always been a great escape from city life for me. When I head there for Thanksgiving, I’m surrounded by fall foliage; in the winter, there’s always plenty of snow; and in the summer, I can go hiking and swimming. I love the fresh air, the tranquility, and the chance to disconnect (there’s also little to no cell phone service).
Phoenicia is small, but Main Street has a bunch of local restaurants and stores, plus a post office, gas station, and liquor store. For dining, there’s Brios, a pizzeria with a surprisingly extensive menu that includes homemade cakes; the neighboring Sportsman’s Alamo Cantina; and The Phoenician Steakhouse for a more upscale experience. You can shop at stores like Tender Land Home, a home goods and gift store; The Nest Egg; and Melange. And, it’s worth mentioning Phoenicia Supply, a hardware store where you can also buy fishing supplies—and bus tickets back to the city. On Route 28, you’ll find Phoenicia Diner, which serves modern diner food.
It’s also great for outdoorsy activities. In the winter, you can ski at nearby Belleayre Mountain Ski Center in Highmount and Hunter Mountain Resort in Hunter. In the summer, you can tube down Esopus Creek at Town Tinker Tube Rental and if camping is your thing, there are campsites like Phoenicia Black Bear Campground and Woodland Valley Campground. For hiking, check out Tanbark Trail and Tremper Mountain Trail. You can also ride “Rail Explorers,” (like a bicycle for four people) on historic railroad tracks through the woods.
Real estate is also much cheaper than what you can get for your money in the city and other Hudson Valley towns. The median sales price is $240,000, according to Realtor.com, and it's a good place to buy a house if you want more privacy and outdoor space. Most houses have some land, but you can also find houses closer to town on smaller plots. There’s a mix of cabin-style and more traditional houses.
