Norwalk, Connecticut is just over an hour from New York City on Metro-North and has a thriving downtown scene as well as parks, beaches, golf and yacht clubs—giving this small waterfront city a few surburban-like amenities.

The area continues to see a high demand from New Yorkers, especially those who now have hybrid work schedules. A longer commute to the NYC is tolerable for buyers who don’t have to be in the office full time, says Alexandra Friedman, a broker at Compass. Right now there are more listings on the market because sellers are taking advantage of the increase in demand, she says. You can find a mix of single-family homes, townhouses, and condos across a range of price points.

You’ll find a lot of furniture, decor, and upholstery stores in Norwalk, which is developing its own design scene, Friedman says. Stores include Lillian August Design Center, AXEL Interiors, and Classic Upholstery. There's also The SoNo Collection, a mall with stores like Apple, Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, and Talbots. Downtown in South Norwalk (or SoNo as the locals call it), there’s a mix of locally-owned stores, galleries, and eateries like The Spread, Match, and Evarito’s.

To get some fresh air, you can head to beaches and parks like Calf Pasture Beach, Matthews Park, and Oyster Shell Park. The Maritime Aquarium and Stepping Stones Museum for Children are also popular destinations.

So if you're looking for more space outside the city, check out these five houses for sale in Norwalk.
